    when we found out my grandpa had cancer we heard about MD anderson. this hospital was so great! We stayed there weeks at a time. The nurses were so nice. My grandpa got stronger, then he lost his battle. I want to thank MD Anderson so much! You guys did the best y'all could. Thank you so much for at least giving it a shot!

    Our Leadership: Dr. Edgardo Rivera, Medical Director

    Dr. Rivera is a medical oncologist who most recently worked as the medical director at Methodist Hospital’s Breast Center in Houston, Texas.

    Dr. Rivera is developing the center’s clinical vision, strategy and focus. He will direct all cancer program clinical activities and act as the lead clinical representative.

    Dr. Rivera received his post graduate training at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and joined the faculty there as an instructor in the Department of Breast Medical Oncology in 1996. He progressed through assistant professor and associate professor positions in that department.

    Dr. Rivera has significant experience in breast cancer research, and has served as principal investigator in several clinical trials. He has published numerous articles and presented around the world about his work to improve of breast cancer treatment.

    He has received many awards and accolades during his career including the “2009 Doctor’s Choice Award” from Health and Fitness Magazine and the Bristol Myers Squibb Award of Distinction.

    Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center Doctor Profile | Meet Horst Klueppelberg, MD, PhD

    Dr. Klueppelberg specializes in the following diseases, conditions and procedures: multiple myeloma and other plasma cell disorders, lymphomas, myelodysplastic syndrome, brain cancers, head and neck cancers, and thoracic cancers.

    “I strive to provide the highest standard of care with a team of highly skilled and dedicated professionals,” Dr. Klueppelberg said.

    Dr. Klueppelberg earned a doctorate in experimental pathology and a medical degree at the University of Cologne, Faculty of Medicine in Germany.

    Dr. Klueppelberg is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology and believes that the edge in cancer care comes from good teamwork. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, desert gardening, travel and collecting European train models.

    Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center Doctor Profile | Meet Matthew Callister, MD

    Dr. Callister is a graduate from the Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C. He then completed an internship at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education in Scottsdale, Arizona.  

    “I believe in compassionate, coordinated, state-of-the-art cancer care,” Dr. Callister said.

    Active in professional organizations such as American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology and  Children’s Oncology Group ; Dr. Callister has a special interest in cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, head and neck.

    Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center Doctor Profile | Meet Mary Cianfrocca, D.O.

    Dr. Cianfrocca treats patients with all stages of breast cancer and is devoted to clinical research of new treatments. She makes patient education a priority.

    “I strongly believe that the best care for patients with breast cancer is achieved by a multidisciplinary team, providing a comprehensive treatment plan and in an environment that is supportive for the patient,” Dr. Cianfrocca said.

    Dr. Cianfrocca is a graduate of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine; Dr. Cianfrocca completed her internship at the Chicago Osteopathic Medical Center.

    Dr. Cianfrocca is board certified medical oncologist who completed her hematology/oncology fellowship at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, traveling and reading.
